Conversational AI in HR is a natural-language interface, by chat or voice, through which employees and managers get HR answers and complete HR tasks without navigating the HR system. At its simplest it answers policy questions from approved sources; at its most capable it takes action, such as checking a leave balance and filing the request, within the user's permissions.
There is a ladder. A scripted FAQ bot matches keywords to canned answers. A grounded assistant retrieves the relevant policy passage and answers from it, saying so when the source does not cover the question. An agent adds tool calling and a reason-act-observe loop so it can act, not just explain. The enterprise test is whether the conversation carries the user's identity and permissions with it, especially when it runs in Teams, Slack, or a portal outside the HR system, so a request cannot unlock more than the person is entitled to. Darwinbox's Employee Support Agent handles policy queries and actions such as leave applications on mobile and web, and supports voice input; JSW deployed it across a 40,000-person workforce to reduce traffic to manual HR support.
