AI Governance in HR

Meaning & Definition

AI Governance in HR

AI governance in HR is the set of policies, roles, controls, and review processes an organization uses to decide which AI systems may touch workforce decisions, what each is allowed to do, who is accountable for its outputs, and how it is monitored over time. It covers the full lifecycle: approving a use case, setting its autonomy limits, auditing its behaviour, and retiring it.

Governance answers three questions before an AI system runs: what may it decide on its own, what must a person approve, and how will anyone know afterwards what it did. In practice this means a cross-functional owner (typically HR, legal, IT, and data protection), a register of AI systems in use, defined human oversight points, and a review cadence tied to the risk of the decision. The common failure is treating governance as a one-time configuration at implementation; people, policies, and models change, so the controls have to be continuous. Darwinbox's AI is overseen by a cross-functional Responsible AI Council spanning product, legal, and engineering, with models risk-ranked by their impact on people decisions.
