Prompt Engineering

Prompt engineering is the practice of writing and refining the instructions given to a language model so it produces reliable, on-scope output. In an agent, the standing instructions (the system prompt) define its role, tone, scope, and rules and apply to every conversation, which makes them the single biggest lever over agent quality.

Most "the agent did something weird" problems trace back to vague or conflicting instructions. Good instructions say what the agent should do, what it should not do, and what to do when it does not know. Focused and unambiguous beats long and rambling, partly because instructions consume the context window, which is a budget. In enterprise settings prompt templates are managed centrally and version-controlled so they can be audited and improved.
