Skills Intelligence

Meaning & Definition

Skills Intelligence

Skills intelligence is the use of AI to identify, infer, and continuously map the skills an organization has, the skills each role requires, and the gap between them. It runs on a skills ontology, a structured graph of skills, roles, and their relationships, and updates as employees complete learning, change roles, or add experience.

The difference between a skills library and skills intelligence is inference. A library is a static list HR maintains by hand. Skills intelligence reads profiles, job descriptions, learning records, and external taxonomies (O*NET, ESCO, labor market data) to infer skills that were never declared, group adjacent skills, and keep the map current. It is the foundation for semantic job matching, learning recommendations, and career pathing, which is why its quality shows up downstream in every talent decision. Darwinbox maintains an AI-updated skills and job ontology graph drawing on O*NET, ESCO, job board data, and internal org data; Quick Heal used it to map 127 skills and reduce external hiring by 20 percent.
